Disability Pride Month Statement, by Rebecca Koltun

Disability Pride Month is all about inclusion, with this year's theme being “We Want A Life Like Yours.” This does that mean that people with disabilities live meaningless lives that they trade with anyone else. Rather, it means that they seek inclusion, equality and equal opportunity to enhance their already meaningful life. As a wheelchair user, I face a lot of challenges getting around and I often cannot do things that others can. I am frequently in public thinking to myself “The world is just not made for people with disabilities.” While this may serve as a way to keep my mind at peace, it is no excuse for the lack of opportunities, inclusion, and equality that people disabilities deserve but often do not get. By celebrating disability pride month, we can shed more light on the importance of advocating for people disabilities so that they can live the best possible lives.
